Why this happens
There is one failure that accounts for most bathroom problems we are called to repair, and it is missing waterproofing. Tile and grout are not waterproof. What matters is the membrane behind them and the pitch of the shower pan toward the drain. Both are invisible once the tile goes on, which is exactly why they get skipped. Every bathroom we build gets a full membrane and a properly pitched pan.
