What causes it
Why this happens
Siding is a rain screen, not a seal. It is supposed to shed most of the water while a drainage plane behind it handles what gets past. The failures we see are almost always in that second layer, where house wrap was omitted or flashing at windows was lapped the wrong way. Water then sits against the sheathing. New siding over that hides it rather than fixing it, which is why we check behind before quoting.

What siding costs in NYC
Vinyl siding typically runs 6 to 11 dollars per square foot installed. Fiber cement runs 11 to 18 because the material costs more and is slower to hang. Removing existing siding and repairing sheathing found underneath is priced separately, because nobody can know how much there is until it comes off.

Siding questions
Can you side over the existing siding?
It is possible with vinyl but we rarely recommend it. Going over old cladding hides any rot underneath and adds weight without adding a proper drainage plane.
Vinyl or fiber cement?
Vinyl costs less and needs almost no maintenance. Fiber cement holds paint, resists impact better and looks closer to real wood, at a higher install cost.
How long does a siding job take?
A typical single family house runs one to two weeks depending on size, detail and how much repair is found once the old cladding comes off.
