What causes it
Why this happens
Almost every concrete failure we are called to traces back to what happened before the pour. Base not compacted in layers, no reinforcement, joints cut too late or not at all, or the mix watered down on site to make it easier to place. Concrete is unforgiving about all four. You cannot see any of it once the surface is finished, which is exactly why cheap concrete work looks fine for two years and then fails.

Residential flatwork commonly runs 12 to 22 dollars per square foot depending on thickness, reinforcement and finish. Sidewalk work built to DOT specification sits at the upper end because the spec is stricter. Demolition and removal of existing concrete is charged separately and is a real cost, not a rounding error.

Concrete questions
How thick should a residential driveway be?
Four inches over a compacted base for cars, five to six inches where trucks or heavy vehicles park. Anything less will crack under load no matter how good the finish looks.
How long before I can drive on new concrete?
Foot traffic after roughly 24 to 48 hours. Vehicles after seven days minimum. Full cure strength takes about 28 days.
Do you replace or resurface?
If the slab is structurally sound and the problem is surface only, resurfacing is cheaper and works well. If it has settled, heaved or cracked through, replacement is the only lasting fix.
